Why did fruit flies appear in my Charlotte kitchen out of nowhere?
They did not appear so much as finish developing. A few adults came in on produce or through a screen days earlier, laid eggs on something fermenting, and the generation emerged together. With summer highs near 89F holding indoor temperatures in the productive range, the delay between arrival and cloud is about a week.
Do they go away in the winter here?
Outdoors mostly, indoors no. An average winter low around 32F pauses the outdoor population for stretches, so a Charlotte fly problem in January is living entirely on an indoor source. That is actually good news for the search, because the material has to be inside your own walls and the list of candidates is short.
What is the difference between fruit flies, drain flies, and phorid flies?
Habitat and shape. fruit flies are tan with red eyes and hover over food and drink. Drain flies look fuzzy and moth-like, rest on walls, and breed in pipe film. Phorid flies have a humped back, run before they fly, and often mean a sewer leak or damp soil under a slab. Each one calls for different work.
How long before they are gone after I clean?
Plan on about two weeks. The University of Maryland Extension puts the cycle at eight to ten days, so any egg or pupa already in place finishes regardless of what you do afterward. The right measure is the trend, not the daily number. Falling counts mean it is working; a flat count means another source is still active.
Can I get rid of them with traps alone?
No. A vinegar cup catches adults in the room where it sits and nothing else, and it cannot reach eggs inside a drain or larvae under an appliance. Traps earn their place as a search tool: several cups in different rooms tell you where numbers are concentrated, which is where the cleaning should start.
Should I spray first and clean later?
The other way around. An aerosol reaches flying adults only, so spraying while the fermenting material is still there produces a quiet evening and a fresh wave within days. Environmental Protection Agency guidance on integrated pest management sets the order: inspect, remove the source, and use a product only if something remains.
Our office break room has them. What should we check?
The coffee station drip tray, the underside of the sink strainer, the fruit bowl, the recycling for soda and cold brew cans, and the crumb tray under the toaster. Are fruit flies dangerous to have around food?
They do not bite or transmit disease directly, but they carry material on their bodies from wherever they last fed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention treats contaminated food surfaces as a legitimate route, so wipe down counters and cutting boards during an outbreak and keep prepared food covered until the flies are gone.
